East European Rally Cup champions – Castrol Ford Team Turkey make history

Castrol Ford Team Turkey made history this weekend as Yağız Avcı and Bahadır Gücenmez wrapped up the East European Rally Cup; the first Turkish team in history to win a European Rally Championship.

Securing a podium finish behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta S2000 at this weekend’s 45th Rally Serbia, Avcı excelled where his rivals faltered. Competing at the head of the field throughout the two-day event, the Turk kept his composure to bring home the championship laurels.

With a strong season consisting of regular podium finishes, the team end the year with a total of 760 points – 45 clear of their closest rival in second.

The result marks the end of an impressive and successful season for Castrol Ford Team Turkey having come to global attention when Avci won the tenth round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge at the 2012 Prime Yalta Rally last month (which also formed the third round of the East European Rally Cup).

The team will celebrate their triumphant season by lifting the East European Rally Cup trophy on home soil at the FIA’s prize-giving gala in Istanbul at the end of the year.
