IRC Corsica Rally 2012 – Day 1 Skoda Motorsport

Andreas Mikkelsen & Ola Floene won the opening leg of the Corsica Rally, the fourth event of this year’s IRC Championship.

The Norwegian crew in a factory Fabia Super 2000 had to fight for every tenth of a second with Giandomenico Basso and Dani Sordo – after the first three stages (68 kilometres), these first three crews to have crossed the finish line today found themselves squeezed within just three seconds.

Jan Kopecký in another factory Fabia is sixth after Day 1: “We were saving the tyres a little in the opening part, and when we wanted to “push” it a bit in Stage 3, we made a small mistake that cost us a few seconds. This rally is quite tyre-consuming, and it will certainly be a thrilling fight until the end.”

The Corsica Rally continues with Leg 2 on Friday (five stages, 116 kilometres). The event is typical of a large number of transfers, with four service zones to be used within three days. Friday’s leg will be the climax – starting with a service stop in Calvi, it continues with a service zone in Corte and ends in the north of the island, in Bastia.

This year’s Corsica Rally copies the profile of traditional events of the 1980s and 1990s when the event was part of the World Championship, and is this year’s first event to be covered live on Eurosport (four stages in total – Stages 5 and 8 on Friday and Stages 10 and 14 on Saturday).
