M-sport Rescue Crews Train For The Season Ahead

A group of motorsport rescue unit personnel gathered at Hollywood Yacht club County Down on Sunday 15th Febuary for a day of medical training, kindly organized by the British Motorsport Marshal Club NI’s own MSA trainer Chris Wilson, with medical guidance provided by paramedic John Fox.

During the fast moving day topic’s such as helmet removal, incident handling, fluid therapy, casualty packaging, incubation and head trauma’s were covered through power point presentations and practical hands-on workshops.

Attendee Tony Gregory said that ” The timing of our training day turned out to be very apt given the recent horrific rallying accident that involved F1 ace Robert Kubica. Unfortunately this accident has proved to be quite a talking point across the sport. These high profile incident’s are always very regretable, but it has given us 3 great examples which we used today. One to describe the mechanics of a high speed accident. Two the subsequent medical effects inflicked on the occupants and thirdly the way the rescue services dealt with the incident in Italy. This incident proves that we should always expect the unexpected and prepare for the worst, whether were attending a rally, race circuit event or hillclimb.”

Paramedic John Fox said ” Training days like today’s help our voluntary rescue crew’s keep their medical skills refreshed and at the same time it also allows professionals like me, to up-date the crew’s on the latest techniques and protocols being used in the profession. The sports competitors should have great confidence in the sport’s volunteer rescue crews, which is shown through the high level of equipment carried on their units and the high level of professionalism shown .”
